Gilbert Gottfried was a master of the absurd who turned controversy into a career.
In short: Known for his shrill, exaggerated persona, Gilbert Gottfried was a complex figure who balanced a reputation as one of America's filthiest stand-ups with a prolific career in children's entertainment. From the Aflac duck to Iago in Aladdin, he mastered the art of the uncomfortable, often finding humor in tragedy.
Born in 1955 in Brooklyn, Gilbert Gottfried began his comedy career at 15, initially performing impressions of classic actors. He eventually developed a unique, chaotic style that moved beyond observational humor into the realm of the absurd. His signature persona—a grating, high-pitched voice and squint—was a deliberate characterization, distinct from his natural speaking style. This persona made him a polarizing figure, frequently dubbed the 'King of Too Soon' for his tendency to joke about recent tragedies, including the September 11 attacks and the 2011 Japanese earthquake.
Gottfried's career was defined by these contradictions. While he was blacklisted after a 1991 Emmy Awards monologue and fired from his role as the Aflac duck in 2011, he simultaneously became a beloved voice in animation. He voiced iconic characters like Iago in Disney's Aladdin and Mister Mxyzptlk in various DC animated projects. His work ethic was legendary, and his frugality was a well-known trait among his peers; he famously avoided public transport fares and even visited friends' apartments just to use their VCRs to watch films.
In his later years, Gottfried found a new medium in podcasting. Launched in 2014, 'Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast' allowed him to showcase his deep knowledge of classic cinema and interview veteran entertainers. The show highlighted his earnest side, contrasting with the abrasive stage persona that made him famous. Gottfried passed away in 2022 at age 67 from recurrent ventricular tachycardia, complicated by type II myotonic dystrophy. His gravestone, inscribed with 'Too Soon,' serves as a final, fitting nod to both his controversial comedy and his untimely departure from the stage.
