How a floor sweeper became the most famous barfly in American television history
In short: George Wendt began his career at Chicago's Second City theater with a broom in his hand. He soon ascended to global recognition as Norm Peterson on Cheers, a role that defined the sitcom era. Yet, his life extended far beyond the barstool, spanning Broadway stages, film, and unexpected reality television.
Born in 1948 in Chicago, George Wendt’s path to stardom was unconventional. After being expelled from the University of Notre Dame for a 0.00 GPA, he eventually graduated from Rockhurst College in 1971. His entry into show business at The Second City in 1975 started with manual labor, but he quickly transitioned to the stage, where he met his future wife, Bernadette Birkett. Birkett would later provide the voice for Vera, the unseen and frequently disparaged wife of Wendt’s most iconic character, Norm Peterson.
Wendt’s portrayal of Norm on Cheers from 1982 to 1993 became a cultural touchstone. Appearing in all 275 episodes, his entrance—marked by the iconic chorus of "Norm!"—earned him six consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor. The character’s popularity was such that Host International even created animatronic likenesses for airport bars, leading to a notable legal battle over publicity rights. Beyond the bar, Wendt was a versatile performer, appearing in films like Fletch and Spice World, and taking on challenging stage roles, including Edna Turnblad in Hairspray on Broadway.
In his later years, Wendt remained active, appearing in everything from the musical Elf to the reality competition The Masked Singer. He maintained deep ties to his Chicago roots, even as he navigated a diverse career that included guest spots on The Simpsons and a recurring role as a "Superfan" on Saturday Night Live. Wendt passed away in May 2025 at age 76. His legacy is cemented not just in television history, but in the physical landscape of his hometown, where a block is now designated "George Wendt Way."
