In short: In 2002, Toho released a film that broke the Millennium era's pattern by acknowledging previous films. It features Kiryu, a mecha constructed from the bones of the original 1954 Godzilla, tasked with defending Japan against a new member of the same devastating species.

Directed by Masaaki Tezuka, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla serves as the 27th film in the franchise and the fourth in the Millennium period. Unlike many films in this era that ignore previous installments, this story alludes to Toho's Shōwa-era kaiju films, creating a sense of continuity. The plot centers on Akane Yashiro, a lieutenant in the Anti-Megalosaurus Force (AMF), who must pilot the MFS-3 Kiryu—a cyborg mecha—to prevent Godzilla from attacking Japan. The film's production was overseen by Masaaki Tezuka, with special effects provided by Yūichi Kikuchi. This production marks the 26th entry in the overall Godzilla series.

The creation of Kiryu, a name derived from the Japanese for "machine dragon," is driven by scientists like single father Tokumitsu Yuhara. The mecha is equipped with advanced systems, including command aircraft and the Absolute Zero Cannon. However, the machine faces a psychological crisis: during a battle in Yokohama, Godzilla's roar triggers memories of its past life, causing the cyborg to go berserk and lose control of its systems. This mechanical entity was developed by a team of scientists, including Tokumitsu Yuhara. During its initial presentation, its remote capabilities and command aircraft were showcased to the world.

The conflict reaches a climax in Shinagawa, where Akane must bypass the disabled remote piloting system to take manual control of the internal cockpit. In a final confrontation, she uses the machine's thrusters to propel the combatants into the ocean before firing the Absolute Zero Cannon at point-blank range. The battle leaves Godzilla injured and retreating, while Kiryu sustains heavy damage but successfully repels the threat. The intense struggle concludes with the mecha being returned to base for necessary repairs. This victory ensures that the threat posed by the monster is successfully repelled.
