How a 90-minute war thriller became a digital blockbuster during a global pandemic
In short: When the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered cinemas, Sony sold the Tom Hanks-led war film Greyhound to Apple TV+ for 70 million dollars. The result was a massive streaming success, proving that a lean, high-tension naval drama could capture audiences just as effectively as a traditional summer theatrical blockbuster.
Directed by Aaron Schneider and written by Tom Hanks, the 2020 film Greyhound adapts C. S. Forester’s 1955 novel, The Good Shepherd. The story follows Commander Ernest Krause, a career naval officer leading his first wartime mission: protecting an Allied convoy of 37 ships through the Mid-Atlantic gap, known as the Black Pit, in February 1942. Isolated from air support, Krause’s small escort group faces a relentless wolfpack of German U-boats in a series of claustrophobic, high-stakes naval engagements.
The production process was a feat of historical recreation and technical ingenuity. Filming began in March 2018 aboard the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where the cast underwent specialized training. To achieve authenticity, the crew utilized 3D scans of the museum ship ORP Błyskawica in Poland and the last surviving Flower-class corvette, HMCS Sackville, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. These scans allowed for the creation of precise CGI models, while studio sets featuring gimbal-mounted bridges simulated the visceral, rolling motion of a ship at sea.
Critics praised the film’s 90-minute runtime and efficient pacing, though some noted that its intense focus on the logistics of battle left little room for deep character development. Despite its streamlined nature, the film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound. Its digital release on Apple TV+ marked a significant moment in pandemic-era distribution, with the platform reporting it as their biggest debut weekend ever. A sequel, currently in production, will follow Captain Krause from the beaches of Normandy to the Pacific Ocean.
