A hitman returns home for his high school reunion in this cult black comedy
In short: When professional assassin Martin Blank receives an invitation to his ten-year high school reunion, he leaves Los Angeles for his Michigan hometown. He hopes to reconnect with his high school sweetheart, but his past catches up with him as rival killers and federal agents crash the party.
Released in 1997, Grosse Pointe Blank follows Martin Blank, a freelance hitman who struggles to balance his violent profession with a desire to reconcile with his former flame, Debi Newberry. The film originated from a script by Tom Jankiewicz, who was inspired by his own ten-year high school reunion invitation. Jankiewicz, who worked as a substitute teacher and cashier while writing, chose the title to play on the phrase 'point-blank range' and set the story in Grosse Pointe to contrast with his own working-class upbringing.
Director George Armitage took a unique approach to production, often shooting three versions of scenes—a script-faithful version, an understated take, and an over-the-top version—to find the right tone. The film's chaotic energy was further fueled by an improvisational casting process where actors were encouraged to deviate from the written dialogue. Despite the film's dark premise, Armitage worked to ensure the protagonist survived, eventually settling on a final edit suggested by studio executive Joe Roth that cut directly to the couple leaving after a climactic shootout.
The film is widely remembered for its curated soundtrack, which blends 1980s punk, ska, and new wave. Composed by Joe Strummer of The Clash, the music bridges the gap between the protagonist's 1986 graduation and the 1996 reunion setting. While the soundtrack features classics from the era, it also incorporates later tracks like the 1991 Guns N' Roses cover of 'Live and Let Die' and 1996 releases by Eels and The Specials. This musical backdrop helped the film achieve a cult following, with the soundtrack peaking at number 31 on the Billboard 200.
