A Secret Service agent finds his most challenging assignment is a former First Lady
In short: In the 1994 comedy-drama Guarding Tess, agent Doug Chesnic is tasked with protecting a former First Lady who treats him more like a domestic servant than a security professional. Their prickly, bickering relationship takes a dark turn when a routine disappearance reveals a kidnapping plot and a hidden medical crisis.
Directed by Hugh Wilson and starring Shirley MacLaine and Nicolas Cage, Guarding Tess explores the friction between a rigid Secret Service agent and a headstrong widow of a former U.S. president. Tess Carlisle, known for her philanthropic work, constantly exasperates Doug Chesnic by demanding he perform menial chores. When Doug defies her, she leverages her connection to the sitting President to reprimand him, highlighting the power imbalance inherent in his assignment.
The film's tone shifts dramatically from workplace comedy to thriller when Tess is kidnapped. The investigation reveals that her recent dizzy spells were symptoms of an inoperable brain tumor, a secret she had indirectly shared with Doug. The rescue mission, which involves a desperate interrogation of her chauffeur, Earl, culminates in a tense raid where the agents must dig Tess out from beneath a barn floor. Despite the film's melodramatic final act, critics noted that the comic tension between the two leads remained its strongest element.
Production of the film was fraught with industry hurdles. Originally slated for Paramount, the project faced uncertainty following the departure of studio head Brandon Tartikoff. When new leadership proved unreceptive to the script, producer Scott Rudin departed, and TriStar Pictures eventually picked up the project. While the film received mixed reviews and grossed $30.8 million worldwide, it remains a curious case study in genre blending. Notably, while the Secret Service did not cooperate with the production, a real-life agent later remarked that the film was fairly accurate regarding the dynamics of a small protection detail.
