How a creator traded absurdist comedy for emotional depth in a forest community
In short: After his success with Chowder, creator C. H. Greenblatt sought a new direction for his next project. He moved away from pure absurdity to focus on heart and emotional connection. The result was Harvey Beaks, a series set in Littlebark Grove that explored the gentle adventures of a cautious bird.
Harvey Beaks follows the life of Harvey, a 10-year-old anthropomorphic bird who lives in the forest community of Littlebark Grove. Unlike his adventurous best friends, the imp twins Fee and Foo, Harvey is naturally cautious and often struggles to step outside his comfort zone. The series, which premiered on Nickelodeon in March 2015, was designed by creator C. H. Greenblatt to prioritize emotional resonance over the absurdist comedy that defined his previous work, Chowder.
The production process for the show was unconventional. Greenblatt utilized social media platforms like Tumblr to recruit artists, prioritizing the quality of their personal portfolios over their professional animation experience. To capture the authentic voices of the younger characters, the production employed child actors, a practice that mirrored the approach taken on his earlier shows. The series was also notable for its musical score, which was composed by Ego Plum and performed by a 40-piece orchestra.
Despite positive critical reception, the show's broadcast history was turbulent. Following a renewal for a second season in 2015, the series was cancelled in late 2016. The transition of the remaining episodes to the Nicktoons network was marked by communication breakdowns between the network and the creator, leading to delays and public frustration. The final episode aired on December 29, 2017, marking the end of the series' run on television, though it remains available on streaming platforms like Paramount+.
