The paranormal investigator who was born in Hell but raised to be a hero.
In short: Summoned to Earth by Nazi occultists in 1944, Hellboy is a red-skinned, horned cambion who defies his demonic lineage. Instead of fulfilling his prophesied role as the destroyer of worlds, he works for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, protecting humanity from the very dark forces that birthed him.
Born from the union of a human witch and an archdemon, Hellboy’s origins are steeped in ancient tragedy. Conceived in 1574 and born in Hell in 1617, he was immediately fitted with the Right Hand of Doom—a stone relic that once belonged to an angel named Anum. This hand is the literal key to the apocalypse, capable of releasing the Ogdru Jahad, a seven-headed dragon imprisoned in space. Despite these dark origins, his upbringing by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who adopted him in 1946, instilled in him a sense of humanity that keeps him firmly on the side of the living.
Hellboy’s life is defined by a constant struggle against his own destiny. He matured rapidly, appearing fully grown by age eight, and has remained in that state for over sixty years. Throughout his career as the world's greatest paranormal investigator, he has faced witches, vampires, and Lovecraftian horrors, often while being pursued by entities like the archdemon Astaroth, who insists he is destined to rule Hell. Even when he resigned from the B.P.R.D. to become an independent detective, he could not escape the machinations of those seeking to use his stone hand to trigger Ragnarok.
The narrative of Hellboy concludes with the ultimate sacrifice. After battling through the Abyss and confronting the remnants of Hell’s aristocracy, he eventually returns to Earth to face the final apocalypse. In the end, he facilitates the destruction of the world to stop the Ogdru Jahad, only to use his own blood—which has the supernatural power to sprout lilies—to revive the world. By stepping into the iron maiden form of the goddess Hecate, he accepts his exhaustion with violence and breathes life back into the Earth, finally ending the cycle of destruction.
While the comics and films offer different interpretations of his powers, Hellboy is consistently portrayed as possessing superhuman strength, endurance, and a healing factor that renders him nearly deathless. He prefers hand-to-hand combat, often relying on his wits and his massive stone fist rather than the firearms he famously struggles to aim. His story is not just one of supernatural action, but a reflective journey about choosing one’s own path despite the weight of an inescapable, preordained fate.
