From child actor to pop icon: how Hayley Kiyoko reclaimed her own narrative
In short: Hayley Kiyoko transitioned from a Disney-era child star to a celebrated queer artist by refusing to hide her identity. By directing her own music videos and writing a best-selling novel, she has built a career that prioritizes authentic representation, turning personal struggles into a platform for global LGBT advocacy.
Born in 1991 to a choreographer mother and an actor father, Hayley Kiyoko began her career early, appearing in national commercials and acting in television films like Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins. Despite early success, she struggled to find meaningful roles as a biracial woman and felt the industry was deeply heteronormative. This frustration pushed her toward music, where she sought to normalize lesbian relationships and provide the representation she lacked growing up.
Kiyoko’s creative control is central to her work. After suffering a concussion in 2016, she channeled her recovery into her third EP, Citrine, and began self-directing her music videos. This autonomy allowed her to explore themes of identity and same-sex attraction with raw honesty. Her 2015 single, Girls Like Girls, became a cornerstone of her career, eventually inspiring a 2023 novel that topped the Young Adult Hardcover charts for seven weeks and a 2026 film adaptation she co-wrote and directed.
Beyond her artistic output, Kiyoko has become a prominent advocate for the LGBT community. Fans have dubbed her 'Lesbian Jesus' for her commitment to visibility, and she has used her platform to support homeless youth and encourage political engagement. Whether through her music, her writing, or her public activism, Kiyoko remains focused on the power of seeing oneself reflected in media, ensuring that the next generation does not have to fear the same rejection she once did.
