In short: When a beloved franchise returns without its original visionary, the results can be jarring. The 2019 Hellboy reboot aimed for a grittier, R-rated take on the comic book hero, but behind the scenes, production tensions and critical backlash turned a high-stakes project into a notable box office disappointment.

The journey to the 2019 Hellboy began in 2014, when creator Mike Mignola and screenwriter Andrew Cosby started developing a new story. Initially intended as a sequel to the acclaimed films directed by Guillermo del Toro, the project shifted course when del Toro declined a producer role and star Ron Perlman refused to return without him. Director Neil Marshall was brought on to helm a darker, R-rated reboot, with David Harbour cast as the titular demon. The film drew inspiration from comic arcs like Darkness Calls and The Wild Hunt, aiming for a tone that balanced horror with comic book sensibilities.

Production was reportedly fraught with internal friction. Reports from TheWrap alleged that producers Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin frequently undermined Marshall, with claims of on-set script rewrites and disputes over creative design choices. While representatives for the producers denied these allegations, the film's release was met with significant critical hostility. Critics pointed to an inconsistent tone and excessive gore, often unfavorably comparing the new entry to the del Toro films, despite offering praise for Harbour’s performance and the practical makeup effects.

Commercially, the film failed to find its audience. Debuting in April 2019, it earned only $12.1 million in its opening weekend in the United States and Canada, eventually grossing $55.1 million worldwide against a $50 million production budget. Analysts labeled it a box-office bomb, citing poor reviews and a lack of franchise momentum. The film’s struggle highlights the difficulty of rebooting established intellectual property, especially when the creative vision diverges sharply from the audience's expectations. By 2024, the franchise attempted another reset with the release of Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
