Ari Aster's debut horror film Hereditary was intentionally designed to resemble a miniature dollhouse.
In short: To achieve a claustrophobic, dollhouse aesthetic, director Ari Aster filmed most of his 2018 supernatural horror debut on custom-built soundstage sets rather than practical locations. This deliberate visual choice mirrors the film's obsession with fate, as a grieving family finds themselves trapped in a nightmare they cannot escape.
Ari Aster, previously known for provocative short films like The Strange Thing About the Johnsons, pitched Hereditary as a family tragedy to secure funding, intentionally downplaying its horror elements. The narrative follows Annie Graham, a miniature artist, and her family as they unravel after the death of her mother, Ellen. Aster envisioned the film as two inextricable halves: a domestic drama about grief that gradually curdles into a full-bore nightmare.
The film’s production was defined by intense creative friction. Aster lacked final cut privileges, leading to significant disagreements with his financier, Kevin Frakes. Despite these behind-the-scenes tensions, the film became a commercial success, grossing $82.8 million worldwide against a $10 million budget. It received universal critical acclaim, with reviewers frequently comparing its craftsmanship to classics like The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby.
Central to the plot is the demon king Paimon, a figure drawn from historical grimoires such as The Lesser Key of Solomon. In the film's mythology, Paimon requires a male host to manifest fully, a detail that drives the tragic, ritualistic conclusion. While critics lauded the film—particularly Toni Collette’s performance—mainstream audiences were more polarized, with CinemaScore polling an average grade of D+.
Aster has since confirmed that he possesses a finished screenplay for a prequel to the story. However, he has yet to move forward with the project, noting that he has not yet identified the appropriate moment to bring that specific vision to the screen.
