Is Ari Aster’s surrealist odyssey a masterpiece of neurotic dread or a colossal slog?
In short: Beau Is Afraid, a 2023 tragicomedy starring Joaquin Phoenix, follows a paranoid man on a bizarre journey to his mother’s house. With a $35 million budget and a sprawling, labyrinthine narrative, the film polarized critics, drawing comparisons to everything from Kafka to Pink Floyd while becoming a notable box-office bomb.
Directed by Ari Aster, the film depicts the life of Beau Wassermann, a middle-aged man living in a crime-ridden city who is haunted by his mother’s claims about his father’s death. After a series of surreal mishaps—including being hit by a food truck and surviving a stabbing—Beau embarks on an odyssey that leads him through a strange, animated forest and ultimately to his mother’s estate. The narrative structure is intentionally non-traditional, with Aster subverting standard three-act storytelling to mirror Beau’s fractured mental state.
The production was an ambitious undertaking, shot in Montreal and Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville between June and October 2021. Aster collaborated with cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski and composer Bobby Krlic, known as the Haxan Cloak, to create a score that tracks Beau’s internal anxiety. The film’s visual language incorporates stop-motion animation by Cristobal León and Joaquín Cociña, adding to the dreamlike, nightmarish atmosphere that critics have compared to the works of David Lynch, Charlie Kaufman, and Jacques Tati.
Reception was deeply divided. While filmmakers like John Waters and Martin Scorsese praised Aster’s bold vision and subversion of structure, other critics found the three-hour runtime exhausting. The film grossed only $12 million against its $35 million production cost, leading to significant financial losses. Despite this, it remains a lightning rod for debate, with some viewing it as a profound exploration of Oedipal agony and others dismissing it as a self-indulgent, navel-gazing exercise in excess.
