In short: Director Claire Denis explores the limits of humanity in her 2018 science fiction film High Life. Featuring a crew of death-row inmates sent toward a black hole, the story abandons traditional space tropes for a visceral, non-linear examination of isolation, survival, and the primal instincts that persist in the void.

High Life follows a group of criminals on a deep-space mission to extract alternative energy from a black hole. Rather than a standard space adventure, the film functions as a psychological experiment. The crew is subjected to medical testing by a scientist named Dibs, who is obsessed with achieving artificial insemination in space. The narrative structure is intentionally non-linear, beginning with the protagonist, Monte, raising a child alone before flashing back to the descent into chaos and despair that defined their journey.

The film draws on diverse influences and expertise. Director Claire Denis consulted with physicist Aurélien Barrau and visited the European Space Agency's Astronaut Centre to ground the project in reality. The spacecraft itself was designed by artist Olafur Eliasson. Robert Pattinson, who plays the celibate Monte, was compared by Denis to the Arthurian knight Perceval, while Juliette Binoche’s character, Dibs, was modeled after the Greek tragic figure Medea. The production was a complex international collaboration involving companies from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland.

Critical reception was largely positive, with the film holding an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics noted its departure from the high-minded idealism of mainstream science fiction, with some reviewers comparing it to 1970s art-house cinema. The film explores dark, uncomfortable questions about what remains of human progress when individuals are stripped of society and placed in extreme isolation. By the time the ship nears the black hole, the crew has been decimated by violence, radiation, and suicide, leaving Monte to face the final, enigmatic encounter with his daughter, Willow, as they approach the event horizon.
