A space thriller’s reality-bending plot was matched by its own behind-the-scenes financial turbulence
In short: When an astronaut returns from a catastrophic space station accident, she discovers her life has subtly shifted into an unrecognizable version of itself. This psychological thriller, which premiered in 2024, explores fractured realities through a lens of high-stakes science fiction, though its production faced significant real-world fiscal complications.
Created by Peter Harness, Constellation follows Jo Ericsson, a European Space Agency astronaut who survives a collision on the International Space Station. Upon returning to Earth, she finds that her personal history and surroundings no longer align with her memories. The series utilizes a complex narrative structure, featuring dual roles for several actors, such as Jonathan Banks playing both Henry and Bud Caldera, and Rebecca Scroggs portraying both Erica and Frida Lancaster. The show’s atmosphere is heavily influenced by Finnish symbolism, specifically the works of Hugo Simberg, with paintings like The Wounded Angel serving as thematic anchors throughout the episodes.
The production was a massive international undertaking, filming across Germany, Denmark, Morocco, and Finland between July 2022 and February 2023. To achieve its aesthetic, the team constructed extensive sets at Babelsberg Studio in Potsdam, including a detailed replica of the International Space Station. The project was bolstered by substantial public funding, including a record €10 million from the German Motion Picture Fund and €1.5 million in incentives from Business Finland. Despite this backing, the series was canceled in May 2024 after its initial eight-episode run.
The show’s behind-the-scenes narrative became as complicated as its script when reports emerged in August 2023 regarding unpaid bills in Finnish Lapland. Local service providers—ranging from catering firms to electrical contractors—were owed more than €1 million for their work on the production. By the following autumn, the production company, Turbine Studios, reached a settlement with its creditors. While the specific terms of these agreements remain shielded by non-disclosure pacts, the issue was resolved before the series made its global debut in February 2024. Critics have generally responded with moderate favor, noting the show's strong performances despite some uneven storytelling.
