In short: Released in 2021 as a Disney+ exclusive, Home Sweet Home Alone attempted to reboot a beloved holiday franchise. Despite bringing back legacy cast members and incorporating classic musical themes, the film faced harsh criticism for its uninspired approach, leaving audiences and original creators questioning the necessity of the project.

The film follows Max Mercer, who is accidentally left behind when his family departs for Tokyo. Simultaneously, a struggling couple, Jeff and Pam McKenzie, attempt to retrieve a valuable doll they believe Max stole. The plot mirrors the original template, with the McKenzies eventually breaking into the house, only to be met by a series of booby traps set by a defensive Max. Unlike the original, however, the film attempts a tonal shift by framing the intruders as sympathetic figures rather than traditional villains.

Development began in August 2019, following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Directed by Dan Mazer, the production faced significant hurdles, including a halt in filming in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When it finally premiered in November 2021, the reception was overwhelmingly negative. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 15% approval rating, while Metacritic assigned it a score of 35 out of 100, citing a lack of originality and an excruciatingly slow buildup to the expected mayhem.

The project faced skepticism even before its release. Chris Columbus, director of the first two films, publicly questioned the point of rebooting such a classic, arguing for the necessity of original material. Even Macaulay Culkin, the star of the original franchise, later joked that any future script would be hard-pressed to be worse than this iteration. While some reviewers appreciated the film's wholesomeness, the consensus remained that it functioned more as a lazy approximation of a formula than a meaningful contribution to the series.
