In short: Released in 2018, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms was a visual spectacle that failed to capture audiences. Despite a massive production budget and a star-studded cast, the film struggled with poor reviews and a difficult release window, ultimately becoming one of Disney's most significant financial disappointments of the year.

Directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, the film was an ambitious reimagining of the 1816 fairy tale and the 1892 ballet. It followed Clara Stahlbaum, played by Mackenzie Foy, as she discovered a parallel world created by her late mother. While the production boasted high-end aesthetics and a score adapted from Tchaikovsky, the narrative failed to resonate with critics or viewers. Many reviewers described the film as visually stunning yet hollow, criticizing its lack of emotional depth and confusing world-building.

The film's financial performance was hampered by a difficult release schedule. Debuting on November 2, 2018—just days after Halloween—it faced stiff competition and a general lack of audience interest in the concept. With a production budget estimated between $120 million and $133 million, the movie grossed only $174 million worldwide. When accounting for all expenses, analysts estimated the studio lost between $65 million and $90 million, marking it as a rare box office flop for the company during a year otherwise bolstered by its Marvel and Pixar hits.

Behind the scenes, the production was equally complex. Filming took place at Pinewood Studios between October 2016 and January 2017, but the project required 32 days of reshoots in late 2017. Because Hallström was unavailable, Joe Johnston stepped in to direct these sequences, leading both to share directorial credit. Despite the film's poor reception, it was recognized with the ReFrame Stamp for its commitment to hiring women in key production roles, highlighting a rare bright spot in an otherwise troubled release.
