In short: Hospital Playlist explores the lives of five medical school friends who reunite as colleagues in their forties. This South Korean drama balances the high-stakes pressure of Yulje Medical Centre with the enduring bond of a group navigating parenthood, complex family histories, and the quiet search for personal meaning.

Directed by Shin Won-ho and written by Lee Woo-jung, Hospital Playlist serves as the second entry in the Wise Life series. The narrative centers on five specialists: general surgeon Lee Ik-jun, pediatric surgeon Ahn Jeong-won, cardiothoracic surgeon Kim Jun-wan, obstetrician Yang Seok-hyeong, and neurosurgeon Chae Song-hwa. Each character brings a distinct personality and set of personal challenges to the Yulje Medical Centre, ranging from Ik-jun’s experience as a single father to Jeong-won’s internal conflict regarding his religious aspirations.

The series debuted on tvN in March 2020, quickly establishing itself as a significant success within the landscape of cable television. By the end of its first season, it had secured a position among the top ten highest-rated Korean dramas ever broadcast on cable. This momentum continued into the second season, which premiered in June 2021 with a record-breaking 10.007% viewership rating, the highest debut in the network's history.

Beyond the core quintet, the show features an expansive cast of residents, fellows, and medical staff, including characters like Jang Gyeo-ul and twins Jang Hong-do and Jang Yun-bok. This ensemble approach allows the series to examine the hospital environment from multiple perspectives, contrasting the technical demands of surgery with the human stories of those providing care. The show’s ability to weave professional expertise with intimate character development has made it a notable example of contemporary South Korean television storytelling.
