In short: In the South Korean series Hotel del Luna, a mysterious establishment serves as a final stop for spirits with unresolved grudges. While the guests are dead and the staff are bound by centuries of history, the general manager must be a living human to handle the hotel's earthly financial affairs.

Hotel del Luna, originally known as the Guest House of the Moon, operates as a sanctuary for spirits who cannot yet move on to the afterlife. Hidden from the view of ordinary humans during the day, the hotel manifests in its true form only under specific conditions. Its owner, Jang Man-wol, has been bound to the premises for over 1,300 years, serving a penance for a grave sin committed long ago. Man-wol is characterized by her volatile temperament and a penchant for luxury, including expensive champagne and extravagant fashion, which often clashes with the rational nature of her staff.

The hotel requires a human general manager to act as an intermediary between the spirit world and the living. Gu Chan-sung, a Harvard MBA graduate and accomplished hotelier, is forced into this role due to a deal his father struck with Man-wol twenty-one years prior. As Chan-sung navigates his new responsibilities, he frequently attempts to curb Man-wol's spendthrift habits and extortionist tendencies. His presence provides a necessary link to the living world, managing requests involving the ghosts' surviving relatives and acquaintances while the hotel's long-term staff—many of whom have been trapped for centuries—continue their duties.

The series, produced by GTist and written by the Hong sisters, aired on tvN in 2019. It explores complex themes of reincarnation and atonement through its diverse cast of characters, including a Joseon-era scholar, a war-era student, and a reincarnated princess. The narrative reveals the history of the hotel and the truth behind Man-wol's past as the characters confront their own lingering grudges. The success of the show has led to plans for an American remake co-produced by Studio Dragon and Skydance, as well as a stage musical adaptation that premiered in 2022.
