In short: To capture the haunting emptiness of a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, the production of I Am Legend shut down major city arteries, including the Brooklyn Bridge. The result was a visually striking, desolate landscape that redefined the urban horror genre, anchored by Will Smith’s intense, solitary performance as the last human survivor.

Released in 2007, I Am Legend is the third feature-film adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film follows Robert Neville, a U.S. Army virologist who remains the sole human inhabitant of New York City after a genetically engineered measles virus—originally intended to cure cancer—wipes out 90% of the population and transforms others into nocturnal, vampiric mutants known as Darkseekers.

The production faced significant logistical hurdles, particularly the decision to film on location in New York rather than on soundstages. To achieve the film's signature look, the crew used camcorders to film crowded city streets, then employed special effects to digitally erase pedestrians, spectators, and moving cars. One particularly ambitious flashback sequence, filmed on a pier south of the Brooklyn Bridge, required the coordination of 14 government agencies, 250 crew members, and 1,000 extras. This single scene cost $5 million, a massive portion of the film's $150 million budget, and utilized an array of military vehicles, including Humvees and Strykers.

Will Smith’s portrayal of Neville was a grueling challenge, requiring him to maintain a sense of conflict while acting in near-total isolation. To prepare, Smith consulted with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and spoke with individuals who had experienced solitary confinement. The film’s aesthetic was heavily influenced by director Francis Lawrence’s desire to avoid traditional apocalyptic tropes; instead of a dark, scary landscape, he aimed for a "magical" quality, filming much of the action during beautiful, sunny days to emphasize the eerie silence of a deserted metropolis.

While the film was a major commercial success, earning $585 million globally, it faced criticism for its departures from Matheson’s original novel, especially regarding the ending. Despite these critiques, the film remains a landmark in the genre, with a sequel currently in development that will see Smith reprise his role alongside Michael B. Jordan.
