How a gritty basketball drama became the highest-rated film in Adam Sandler's production history
In short: The 2022 sports drama Hustle features Adam Sandler as a weary NBA scout who discovers a raw talent in Spain. Beyond its critical acclaim, the film is notable for its authentic basketball sequences and an extensive roster of real-life NBA stars, coaches, and legends appearing as themselves.
Directed by Jeremiah Zagar, Hustle follows Stanley Sugerman, a Philadelphia 76ers scout whose career is stalled by internal office politics. After discovering Bo Cruz, an unknown player in Spain, Sugerman risks his professional reputation to bring the athlete to the United States. The narrative explores themes of resilience and the personal costs of chasing professional dreams, mirroring Sugerman's own past failures as a college athlete whose career was derailed by a drunk driving incident.
The production is distinguished by its deep integration with the basketball world. Rather than relying on actors to simulate professional play, the film features a vast array of current and former NBA figures, including Dirk Nowitzki, Julius Erving, and Tobias Harris. Filming took place across Philadelphia, utilizing authentic locations like the Tom Gola Arena and the Liacouras Center. The production even secured footage during a real NBA game between the 76ers and the Boston Celtics at the Wells Fargo Center in January 2022.
While some critics argued the script lacked character depth, the film achieved significant success, holding a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—the highest for any Happy Madison production. Adam Sandler’s performance earned him his first-ever Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. Following its June 2022 release on Netflix, the film quickly became the platform's most-viewed title, signaling a successful pivot for Sandler into more grounded, dramatic roles that emphasize his range beyond his traditional comedic persona.
