A buddy comedy about fake marriage that sparked lawsuits, controversy, and surprising critical debate.
In short: When two New York City firefighters pretend to be a gay couple to secure life insurance benefits, they trigger a chaotic chain of events. The 2007 film I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry became a lightning rod for criticism, legal battles, and unexpected discussions about equality and identity.
Directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James, the film follows two FDNY veterans who enter a civil union to bypass insurance paperwork issues. The project had a long gestation, with producer Tom Shadyac planning it as early as 1999 under the title I Now Pronounce You Joe and Benny, originally intended for Nicolas Cage and Will Smith.
The film faced significant backlash upon its 2007 release. Critics panned it for relying on tasteless stereotypes, with review aggregators like Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 15% approval rating. It even earned eight Golden Raspberry Award nominations. Beyond reviews, the production faced a copyright lawsuit from the makers of the 2004 Australian film Strange Bedfellows, which shared a nearly identical premise. The suit was eventually withdrawn after evidence showed an early draft of the American script predated the Australian film.
Despite the negative reception, the film sparked complex discourse. While some outlets labeled it an insult to various groups, others, like the Village Voice, praised it as surprisingly savvy. GLAAD noted that despite the stereotypes, the film functioned as a call for equality. The film's legacy persists in odd ways; in 2020, a Chicago alderman even cited the plot during a city council debate regarding benefits for minority-owned businesses, illustrating how the fictional scenario continues to influence real-world policy discussions.
The film was a commercial success, grossing over $186 million worldwide against an $85 million budget. Its production was marked by creative friction, with screenwriter Alexander Payne reportedly distancing himself from the project because Sandler took significant liberties with the script, a process Payne referred to as "Sandler-izing" the material.
