A vampire mobster thriller that failed at the box office but found a cult legacy.
In short: In 1992, director John Landis attempted to fuse the vampire, gangster, and buddy cop genres in the Pittsburgh-set film Innocent Blood. Despite a unique premise and a performance by Anne Parillaud, the movie became a notorious box-office bomb, struggling to balance its dark humor with its grisly horror elements.
Directed by John Landis and written by Michael Wolk, Innocent Blood follows Marie, a French vampire who adheres to a strict moral code by feeding only on criminals. Her life in contemporary Pittsburgh takes a turn when she targets Salvatore Macelli, a powerful mob boss who survives her attack and transforms into a vampire, subsequently attempting to build a criminal syndicate of the undead. The film features a notable cast, including early appearances by Angela Bassett and Chazz Palminteri, alongside actors like Tony Sirico and Tony Lip, whose roles foreshadowed their later work in The Sopranos.
Landis, who described his vision as a Hammer film directed by Scorsese, was granted significant creative freedom by Warner Bros. Pictures. However, the production faced challenges from the start. The film was shot in Pittsburgh between January and April 1992, and Landis ultimately cut roughly 15 to 20 minutes of footage during post-production to secure an R rating from the MPAA, avoiding an NC-17 classification. Despite these efforts, the film struggled to find its footing with critics and audiences alike, earning only about $5 million against a $20 million budget.
Critical reception was mixed, with many reviewers pointing to awkward tonal shifts and a sluggish pace. Roger Ebert noted that while the film looked great, it lacked a clear thematic focus and felt like an uneasy anthology of styles. Conversely, some critics, such as Kevin Thomas, praised the film's willingness to take risks, highlighting the comic energy brought by Robert Loggia. Over time, the film has seen various home media releases, with the German version, Bloody Marie: Eine Frau Mit Biss, remaining the most complete cut, and a widescreen Blu-ray eventually arriving in 2017.
