The 1999 Inspector Gadget film was a box office bomb that disappointed critics and fans
In short: Disney's 1999 live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series Inspector Gadget struggled to find its footing. Despite a high-profile cast and a significant budget, the film faced harsh criticism for its departure from the source material, ultimately losing the studio approximately $30 million during its theatrical run.
The journey to bring Inspector Gadget to the big screen was long and complex. Universal Pictures initially held the rights in 1993, with Ivan Reitman attached to produce, but the project shifted to Disney after the studio acquired DIC Entertainment. The final film, directed by David Kellogg, featured Matthew Broderick as the iconic bumbling detective and Rupert Everett as his nemesis, Dr. Claw. Production took place across Pittsburgh, Baton Rouge, and Los Angeles, with the tower of Pittsburgh's PPG Place serving as a central location.
The film's reception was largely negative. Critics specifically pointed to the screenplay, visual effects, and editing as major flaws. A significant point of contention for fans was the decision to reveal Dr. Claw's face, a departure from the mystery maintained in the original cartoon. Despite the presence of practical effects by Stan Winston and a soundtrack featuring Smash Mouth, the film struggled to capture the magic of its source material. It was eventually cut from a 110-minute version down to 78 minutes following a test screening.
Financially, the project was a disappointment. It grossed $134 million against a budget of $90 million, resulting in a loss of about $30 million for the studio. While the 2003 direct-to-video sequel, Inspector Gadget 2, attempted to draw more closely from the original series, the 1999 film remains a notable example of a high-budget adaptation failing to resonate with its intended audience. It was even recognized at the 1999 Stinkers Bad Movie Awards with five nominations, including Worst Picture and Worst Director.
