In short: The third installment of the iconic martial arts franchise faced a major legal hurdle when producers attempted to use CGI to resurrect Bruce Lee. The resulting controversy forced a last-minute casting change, yet the film still managed to blend high-octane action with a surprisingly intimate look at the grandmaster's final years.

Released in 2015, Ip Man 3 sought to expand the franchise’s scope by introducing Bruce Lee as a student and Mike Tyson as a ruthless American property developer. The production team initially planned to use computer-generated imagery to capture Lee’s intensity, but this triggered a fierce dispute with Bruce Lee Enterprises. The company, which holds the worldwide rights to Lee’s image, publicly condemned the move as unauthorized, leading the studio to abandon the CGI plan and cast Danny Chan instead.

Beyond the casting drama, the film marked a shift in tone. While previous entries focused on nationalistic struggle, this chapter pivoted toward the personal life of Ip Man, played by Donnie Yen. The plot follows the grandmaster as he balances his duty to protect a local school from triad gangs with the heartbreaking reality of his wife’s cancer diagnosis. Critics were divided on this approach; some praised the introspective, mellowed portrayal of the character, while others dismissed the script as a disjointed collection of subplots.

Behind the scenes, the film was a collaborative effort that often defied its official credits. Although Yuen Woo-ping was the designated action choreographer, Yen frequently improvised on set, particularly during his fight with Tyson. Yen utilized his own knowledge of MMA and physics to target the boxer’s lower body, a creative choice that reflected his deep involvement in the film’s visual language. Despite mixed reviews, the movie was a commercial success, earning over $156 million worldwide and eventually paving the way for a fourth installment in 2019.
