The true story behind the Philadelphia Eagles' most famous underdog, Vince Papale
In short: The 2006 film Invincible dramatizes the life of Vince Papale, a 30-year-old bartender who secured a spot on the Philadelphia Eagles roster in 1976. While the movie captures the grit of South Philadelphia, it takes significant creative liberties with the timeline, the nature of his tryouts, and his professional statistics.
The film depicts Papale as a desperate substitute teacher who earns his NFL opportunity through a public open tryout. In reality, while Papale did attend open tryouts for the semi-pro Philadelphia Bell, his path to the Eagles was via an invitation-only private workout. Furthermore, the movie compresses years of personal history; the departure of his first wife, which serves as a catalyst in the film, actually occurred five years before the events shown. Similarly, his relationship with Janet, his second wife, did not begin until long after his professional football career concluded.
On the field, the film heightens the drama by showing Papale scoring a touchdown during a game against the New York Giants. While he did recover a fumble during that contest, NFL rules at the time prevented the advancement of such a ball, meaning no touchdown was awarded. In fact, Papale never recorded a touchdown during any regular-season NFL game. His only offensive statistic in the league was a single 15-yard reception during the 1977 season. He did, however, catch a game-winning touchdown pass during a 1977 exhibition match against the Patriots.
Despite these departures from historical fact, the film was a commercial success, topping the box office for two consecutive weeks upon its 2006 release. Critics generally praised its authentic portrayal of the city's atmosphere, even if some noted it lacked the visceral impact of other sports dramas. The movie's cultural footprint even extended to television, inspiring an episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia where the main characters attempt their own ill-fated tryouts for the team.
