In short: Riri Williams, the brilliant MIT student who debuted in Wakanda Forever, returns to Chicago in this six-part Marvel series. As she navigates life after her cinematic introduction, she finds herself caught in a dangerous power struggle between advanced engineering and the sinister, mystical influence of the demon Mephisto.

Set six months after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the miniseries follows Riri Williams as she attempts to rebuild her life in Chicago. Expelled from MIT for unauthorized use of university resources, Riri turns to high-stakes illegal activities to fund her inventions. This path leads her to Parker Robbins, a gang leader known as The Hood, who wields dark magical powers granted by the extra-dimensional demon Mephisto. The series explores this collision between Riri’s technological genius and the supernatural forces Robbins commands.

Executive producer Ryan Coogler, who also produced the Black Panther films, envisioned the show as a blend of street-level realism and mystical intrigue. The narrative positions Riri and Robbins as two sides of the same coin, both driven by a desperate hunger for greatness. In a pivotal moment, Mephisto offers Riri a deal to resurrect her deceased best friend, Natalie, forcing her to make difficult moral choices that diverge from the traditional hero's journey. This darker, character-driven approach was intentionally designed to mirror the complex antihero arcs found in prestige dramas like Breaking Bad and The Sopranos.

The production, which filmed in Atlanta and Chicago, utilized a practical suit of armor as a visual reference for its extensive special effects. Premiering in June 2025 as the final entry in Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the show features a sprawling cast including Dominique Thorne, Anthony Ramos, and Sacha Baron Cohen. While critics offered mixed-to-positive reviews, the series saw significant audience engagement, ranking as the most-streamed show on Disney+ shortly after its debut and accumulating over 500 million minutes of viewing time during its opening weeks.
