A Western film where the behind-the-scenes chaos overshadowed the actual story on screen
In short: Jane Got a Gun was intended to be a gritty revisionist Western, but its legacy is defined by a turbulent production history. With constant director turnover, shifting casting, and multiple distribution delays, the film struggled to find its footing, ultimately becoming a box office bomb that critics found uneven.
The film's journey to the screen was marked by extreme instability. Originally based on a script by Brian Duffield that appeared on the 2011 Black List, the production faced a revolving door of talent. Director Lynne Ramsay left the project in March 2013, just as filming was set to begin, leading to a frantic replacement by Gavin O'Connor. The cast saw similar upheaval, with actors like Michael Fassbender, Jude Law, and Bradley Cooper departing due to scheduling conflicts before the final ensemble, including Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor, was solidified.
Financial and distribution hurdles further complicated the film's release. The studio, Relativity Media, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2015, forcing producers to scramble to reclaim rights before The Weinstein Company stepped in. Originally slated for an August 2014 debut, the film did not reach North American theaters until January 29, 2016. By then, the repeated delays had effectively killed any chance for an awards-qualifying run, and the marketing effort failed to generate significant interest.
Upon release, the film grossed only $3.8 million worldwide against a $25 million budget, marking a significant commercial failure. Critics were divided, with some praising the technical craft and Portman's performance, while others argued that the film's disjointed nature betrayed its troubled origins. Many reviewers noted that the drama occurring off-camera—the constant rewrites and personnel changes—seemed more intense than the narrative itself. Ultimately, the film stands as a cautionary tale of how production instability can overwhelm a project's creative vision.
