The dual life of a professor who plays monsters
In short: Joe Chrest balances the rigors of academia with the demands of Hollywood. While he teaches the mechanics of film acting at a major university, he simultaneously portrays iconic characters in global hits like Stranger Things and 22 Jump Street.
Joe Chrest represents a unique intersection of formal artistic training and commercial success. Born in 1963 in St. Albans, West Virginia, Chrest pursued a deeply academic path to his craft, earning an undergraduate degree from Marshall University before obtaining a Master of Fine Arts in acting from Louisiana State University (LSU) in the late 1980s. He spent his formative years in St. Albans, West Virginia. He attended St. Albans High School before moving on to his higher education.
His professional life is split between the classroom and the set. As an adjunct professor at LSU's School of Theatre, Chrest instructs students in the specific nuances of film acting. This academic role is bolstered by his long-standing involvement with the university's creative community, having been a founding member of LSU's Swine Palace since 1992. His college is the College of Music & Dramatic Arts. He has been a member of the Swine Palace for over three decades.
On the commercial side, Chrest has built a prolific career in both independent and blockbuster cinema. His filmography includes notable appearances in the 2012 and 2014 Jump Street sequels, the 2013 film Oldboy, and the 2019 comedy The Perfect Date. Perhaps his most recognizable contemporary role is that of Ted Wheeler in the long-running series Stranger Things, a role he has inhabited since 2016. He appeared in the movie The Butler. He also took part in the 2012 film 21 Jump Street.
This duality highlights a specific model of the modern artist: one who treats acting as both a pedagogical discipline and a viable industry career. By teaching the very techniques he employs on screen, Chrest bridges the gap between the theory of performance and the reality of the entertainment industry. He gave an interview in 2017 regarding his work on the show. His role in the series is scheduled to continue through 2025.
