How a low-budget action script about a retired hitman redefined the modern thriller genre.
In short: When a grieving hitman comes out of retirement to avenge his dog, he inadvertently launches a cinematic phenomenon. Born from a spec script written in four days, John Wick transformed from a risky, underfunded project into a stylized, mythic underworld saga that revitalized the action genre through meticulous, long-take choreography.
In 2012 or 2013, screenwriter Derek Kolstad wrote a spec script titled Scorn, inspired by his interest in revenge and noir films. The story followed John Wick, a legendary assassin in his mid-60s to mid-70s. Producer Basil Iwanyk purchased the rights in February 2013, seeking to develop independent projects. The script was eventually sent to Keanu Reeves, who recommended stunt choreographers Chad Stahelski and David Leitch to direct. Together, they reimagined the protagonist as a younger man, with Reeves—then 49—aiming to portray a 35-year-old character.
The production faced severe financial instability, with Iwanyk struggling to secure funding and even using his personal credit card to cover costs. Filming, which took place in New York City in late 2013, was delayed by two weeks due to these constraints. To manage the $20–$30 million budget, the directors eschewed the rapid-cut style common in contemporary action films. Instead, they utilized long, single takes and wide shots, a choice that was both an aesthetic preference and a practical necessity due to the lack of multi-camera equipment.
The film’s success relied on its distinctive worldbuilding, featuring a criminal underworld governed by strict rituals and gold coins. Critics praised this mythology, which contrasted the realistic, warm life John shared with his late wife, Helen, against the hyper-real, sleek environment of the Continental hotel. Released on October 24, 2014, the film grossed $86 million worldwide, proving that a focused, character-driven approach could turn a modest budget into a prestige action event.
Beyond the box office, the film’s legacy lies in its influence on action cinema. By prioritizing practical stunts and detailed choreography, it set a new standard for the genre. The project expanded into a massive franchise, including sequels, a prequel series, and spin-offs, cementing John Wick as a modern icon of cinema and proving the enduring appeal of a well-crafted revenge story.
