In short: Jonathan Banks left Indiana University without a degree to manage a touring production of Hair. Decades later, he holds a unique record in television history, having earned Emmy nominations for playing the same character across two different hit series, cementing his status as a master of the craft.

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1947, Jonathan Banks grew up in Maryland with a mother who worked for high-ranking naval officers, including Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. His path to acting began at Indiana University, where he shared a stage with Kevin Kline. A pivotal production of The Devil's Disciple convinced him to abandon his studies and pursue a career in theater. He cut his teeth as a stage manager for a touring company of Hair, which took him as far as Australia and New Zealand before he eventually settled in Los Angeles in 1974.

Banks spent years navigating the industry, appearing in everything from public service announcements to cult classics like Airplane! and 48 Hrs. His first major breakthrough arrived in 1987 with the role of Frank McPike in Wiseguy, a performance that earned him his first recognition from the Television Academy. However, it was his transformation into the stoic fixer Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad that redefined his career. This role allowed him to explore a complex, morally ambiguous character that resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.

His work as Ehrmantraut in the prequel series Better Call Saul solidified his legacy. By the time the show concluded, Banks had appeared in 61 of its 63 episodes. This performance, combined with his earlier work, resulted in six total nominations for the top supporting acting honor in drama. He remains the only performer to receive such recognition as a series regular across three distinct shows, a feat made more remarkable by the fact that two of those nominations were for the same character. Beyond his screen work, Banks has lent his voice to various animated projects and video games, including Batman: Arkham Knight and Invincible, while continuing to receive industry honors, such as an honorary doctorate from Indiana University in 2016.
