A superhero blockbuster that cost $300 million but failed to break even at theaters
In short: The 2017 Justice League film was intended to anchor the DC Extended Universe, but a troubled production and a mid-project directorial change resulted in a box-office bomb. Despite its massive budget and star-studded cast, the theatrical release struggled to find its footing, eventually leading to a fan-driven movement for a director's cut.
The path to the 2017 Justice League film was long and volatile. Warner Bros. initially attempted a live-action adaptation in 2007 titled Justice League: Mortal, directed by George Miller. That project collapsed due to the 2007–08 writers strike and production hurdles. It was not until the success of Man of Steel that the studio pivoted to a shared universe, eventually hiring Zack Snyder to direct the team-up film. Principal photography occurred between April and October 2016, but the production faced intense pressure following the critical reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Tragedy struck during post-production when Snyder stepped down following the death of his daughter. Joss Whedon was brought in to oversee the remaining work, which included extensive reshoots and rewrites. These additions were significant, costing approximately $25 million—far exceeding typical reshoot budgets. The process was so invasive that Henry Cavill, who played Superman, had to have his mustache digitally removed because he was simultaneously filming Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The final theatrical version was drastically different from Snyder's original vision; while Snyder retained sole directing credit, estimates from his cinematographer suggest that only about one-tenth of the footage they captured made it into the final cut.
When the film finally premiered in November 2017, it faced a lukewarm reception. It grossed $661.3 million globally, falling well short of the $750 million break-even point required to justify its $300 million production budget. The film's failure to resonate with critics and audiences alike turned it into a commercial disappointment. However, the story did not end there. A dedicated fan campaign advocating for Snyder's original creative intent eventually led to the 2021 release of Zack Snyder's Justice League on HBO Max, providing a starkly different alternative to the theatrical version that had struggled in cinemas years earlier.
