The 1989 buddy cop comedy K-9 turned a mischievous German Shepherd into a star
In short: In this classic action-comedy, a grumpy San Diego detective is forced to partner with a drug-sniffing police dog named Jerry Lee. While the film received mixed reviews from critics, audiences loved the duo, leading to a series of sequels and a lasting legacy for its canine lead.
Released in 1989, K-9 follows Detective Michael Dooley, played by Jim Belushi, as he attempts to take down international drug lord Ken Lyman. To aid his investigation, Dooley is paired with Jerry Lee, a quirky and often disobedient German Shepherd. The film’s humor relies heavily on the dog’s destructive antics and the evolving bond between the two partners as they navigate dangerous stakes in San Diego.
Although the character of Jerry Lee was credited as a single dog, the production actually utilized multiple animals, including stand-ins and backups, to capture the performance. Filming took place between August and October 1988 across various California locations, including the Hotel del Coronado. The movie’s soundtrack featured iconic tracks, including James Brown’s "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and Yello’s "Oh Yeah."
Critical reception was polarized upon release. While reviewers like Stephen Holden of The New York Times noted a lack of narrative credibility, they praised the "breezy pacing" and the dog’s tricks. Conversely, audiences surveyed by CinemaScore awarded the film an A- grade. The project eventually spawned a franchise, including direct-to-video sequels K-911 in 1999 and K-9: P.I. in 2002, as well as a television spin-off titled K-9000.
Despite the mixed critical consensus—holding a 36% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 44% score on Metacritic—the film remains a notable entry in the buddy cop genre. Its longevity is evidenced by subsequent home media releases, including a 2006 DVD, a 2010 collection titled "K-9: The Patrol Pack," and a 2018 Blu-ray release in the United States.
