In short: After years of navigating complex label politics and creative friction, Kelis walked away from the music industry entirely. She didn't just take a break; she stepped out of the race, only to return a decade later with a completely different sonic identity.

Kelis's early career was defined by a symbiotic, yet commercially volatile, relationship with the production duo The Neptunes. While her debut album, Kaleidoscope (1999), earned critical acclaim and international success, she faced significant financial hurdles. Despite being told her publishing royalties would be split evenly with Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, Kelis reported that she made no money from the sales of her first two albums. This period was marked by a tension between her artistic output and the industrial machinery of Virgin Records, which eventually led to her being dropped during the release of her second album, Wanderland (2001).

Her commercial breakthrough arrived in 2003 with the album Tasty. To prove her viability outside of The Neptunes' signature sound, she intentionally collaborated with a diverse range of producers, including Dallas Austin and André 3000. This move was a calculated response to industry skepticism regarding her independent talent. However, the subsequent years were fraught with 'too many cooks in the kitchen.' After releasing Kelis Was Here in 2006, she faced a lack of support from Jive Records, leading to a period of intense creative friction and a subsequent decision to exit the industry.

Kelis famously stated that she felt she was in a race she hadn't realized she was running. She took a hiatus so profound that she declared she would never release another record, only to find that ten years had passed. When she eventually returned in 2009 with Flesh Tone, she had pivoted toward electronic dance music. This transition was a deliberate move to reclaim her agency, ensuring her new direction wasn't 'swept under the rug' by a smaller label, but rather established on her own terms.
