In short: Kelly's Heroes is a cult classic that blends World War II action with a cynical heist plot. While the film follows soldiers chasing 14,000 gold bars, its screenplay was inspired by a genuine, classified robbery of German reserves that remained a mystery for decades after the war ended.

Released on June 23, 1970, Kelly's Heroes follows a group of disillusioned American soldiers who embark on an unauthorized mission to steal $16 million in gold from a bank behind enemy lines. Directed by Brian G. Hutton, the film was an American-Yugoslav co-production filmed on a $4 million budget. It utilized the Yugoslav Army's extensive collection of World War II-era tanks and vehicles to achieve a level of visual realism that was rare for war comedies of that era.

The screenplay, written by Troy Kennedy Martin, was loosely based on an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records titled The Greatest Robbery on Record. This entry described the theft of German National Gold Reserves in 1945 by a combination of U.S. military personnel and German civilians. When MGM researchers inquired about the story in 1968, the editor Norris D. McWhirter suggested that a security cover-up made the event a matter of restricted classification. It was not until researcher Ian Sayer published his findings in 1984 that the extent of the U.S. government's involvement and the subsequent cover-up were fully exposed.

The film itself is noted for its eclectic ensemble cast, including Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, and Donald Sutherland. Despite its lasting popularity, the production faced significant challenges, including MGM cutting 20 minutes of footage that Eastwood believed provided essential character depth. The film remains a unique hybrid of genres, balancing satirical commentary on military bureaucracy with the high-stakes tension of a caper movie, all set against the backdrop of a war that the characters have grown weary of fighting.
