In short: What happens when a devout leader must weigh the sanctity of life against the finality of death? Paolo Sorrentino’s 2025 drama explores the moral labyrinth of an Italian president caught between legalizing euthanasia and granting pardons to those who committed acts of ultimate violence.

Directed by Paolo Sorrentino, La grazia (The Pardon) centers on the fictional Italian President Mariano De Santis. A staunch Catholic and experienced jurist, De Santis faces a profound internal crisis during his 'white semester.' He is tasked with deciding whether to sign a bill legalizing euthanasia while simultaneously navigating petitions for the pardon of two individuals who murdered their partners. The narrative serves as a meditation on the heavy burden of executive power and the complexities of judicial mercy.

The film's creative DNA is rooted in real-world events. Sorrentino revealed that the primary inspiration for the story was a real pardon granted by Italian President Sergio Mattarella. In that actual case, a man was pardoned after being convicted of murdering his wife, who had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease. By weaving this historical reality into a fictional framework, Sorrentino examines the intersection of personal tragedy and national policy.

Production was a meticulous undertaking, with Sorrentino scouting locations across Piedmont before principal photography began in Turin in March 2025. The film features a visually rich tapestry of Italian landmarks, including the Castello del Valentino, the Moncalieri Castle, and the Museo Egizio, as well as the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. The project also features a notable appearance by rapper Guè, appearing as himself.

The film achieved significant critical and commercial success. On 27 August 2025, the movie launched at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival's opening slot, with Toni Servillo securing the Best Actor Volpi Cup. It grossed $10.7 million worldwide, with $8.6 million of that coming from Italy. Critics have praised the work for its restraint and its focus on the virtues of fortitude and patience.
