From hardcore punk drums to BAFTA-winning cinematic scores
In short: Before he became a master of atmospheric pop and award-winning film scores, Ólafur Arnalds was a drummer in the hardcore punk and metal scenes. This transition from aggressive underground music to delicate, string-heavy compositions reveals a unique creative evolution rooted in personal history and technical experimentation.
Born in 1986 in Mosfellsbær, Iceland, Arnalds began his musical journey in the high-energy world of hardcore punk and metal, playing drums for bands like Fighting Shit and Celestine. His shift toward classical-leaning music was sparked by a chance encounter in 2004. While touring with the German metal band Heaven Shall Burn, Arnalds shared demos of 'overly dramatic' prog-rock songs featuring computerized strings and piano. The band's success in Europe led to a label request for a full album of these compositions, marking his first foray into classical music. Arnalds' work is defined by a blend of organic and electronic elements, mixing strings and piano with loops and beats. This duality is evident in his diverse projects: from the experimental techno of Kiasmos (formed in 2009 with Janus Rasmussen) to his 2013 score for the ITV series Broadchurch, which won a BAFTA TV Craft Award. His creative methodology often involves high-frequency output and intimacy. In 2009, he released a track daily for seven days for the 'Found Songs' project, and in 2011, he created 'Living Room Songs,' recording one track per day in his Reykjavik apartment using only a laptop's video recording feature to capture an intimate atmosphere. A significant emotional pillar of his work is his connection to the music of Frédéric Chopin. His grandmother introduced him to Chopin early on, and his 2015 'The Chopin Project' served as a dedication to her. In this project, he composed linking sections for string quintets, piano, and synthesizers to create an emotional arc between Chopin's works. This blend of personal tribute, technical experimentation, and multi-genre fluency has established him as a prominent figure in both the contemporary classical and electronic music landscapes.
