In short: When teenager Leo Dooley moved into his stepfather's home, he expected a normal life. Instead, he stumbled upon a hidden basement housing three siblings with bionic superpowers. This discovery launched a four-season comedy series that captivated millions and redefined the landscape of Disney XD programming during its 2012 debut.

Created by Chris Peterson and Bryan Moore, Lab Rats debuted on February 27, 2012, following a development process that began with a 2010 pilot titled Billion Dollar Freshmen. The premise centered on the domestic friction of the Davenport family in the fictional town of Mission Creek, California. While the show focused on the bionic teens—Chase, Adam, and Bree—navigating the challenges of normalcy, the narrative expanded significantly over four seasons. By the third season, the scope shifted from a suburban basement to a dedicated bionic academy on a remote island, designed to train soldiers to become global heroes.

The series introduced a complex web of antagonists and allies, including the inventor Donald Davenport, his brother Douglas, and various android creations like Marcus and Troy West. The plot also integrated bionic soldiers such as Sebastian and Taylor, complicating the teens' quest for a typical life. Despite its commercial success, the show faced critical scrutiny; Variety critic Brian Lowry famously panned the one-hour premiere, citing a lack of narrative coherence and frequent lapses in internal logic.

Commercially, the show was a juggernaut for the network. Its February 2012 launch drew 1.27 million viewers, marking it as the most-watched series premiere in the history of Disney XD. An encore airing on Disney Channel in March 2012 further solidified its reach, drawing 2.3 million viewers in the kids 2–11 demographic. The series concluded its run on February 3, 2016, following Kelli Berglund's 2015 confirmation that the fourth season would be the final installment. The franchise legacy continued shortly thereafter with the March 2016 premiere of the spinoff, Lab Rats: Elite Force, which merged the show's universe with the series Mighty Med.
