In short: Before it became a ubiquitous soundtrack for road trips and animated films, Tom Cochrane's hit was a personal survival mechanism. Conceived in the 1970s as 'Love Is a Highway', the song was reborn from a demo of mumbled lyrics into a global anthem after a harrowing trip to eastern Africa.

The origins of 'Life Is a Highway' are far more somber than its driving tempo suggests. While the song was originally conceived in the 1970s under the title 'Love Is a Highway' during Cochrane's time with the band Red Rider, it was shelved for years. The track was only reconsidered once Cochrane came back from an eastern Africa journey alongside the World Vision famine relief group. The experience of witnessing poverty was so shocking and traumatic that Cochrane needed an up-tempo spirit to 'hang the experience on.'

The transformation of the track was aided by musician John Webster, who encouraged Cochrane to revisit a demo recording that, at the time, lacked a chorus and contained only improvised lyrics and mumbled vocals. For Cochrane, the song became a personal 'pep talk' about the inability to control life's circumstances and the necessity of doing one's best despite them.

Released in September 1991 via Capitol Records, the song became a massive success, reaching number one in Canada and peaking at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its cultural footprint expanded significantly through covers, most notably by Rascal Flatts for the 2006 Pixar film Cars. That version became a digital powerhouse, surpassing 3.4 million US sales by 2016 and reaching over 1 billion Spotify streams by mid-2026. The song's legacy is so ingrained in Canadian geography that a 322-kilometre section of Manitoba Provincial Road 391 was named in Cochrane's honor in 2016.
