How a budget crisis and a discarded film created a Disney icon
In short: Originally conceived to revive a struggling theme park land, Splash Mountain became one of Disney's most expensive projects. Built from the salvaged parts of a closed attraction and inspired by a controversial film, the ride's history is a complex web of technical failures, creative pivots, and massive financial stakes.
Conceived in 1983 by Imagineer Tony Baxter, Splash Mountain was designed to draw crowds to the sparsely populated Bear Country at Disneyland. The project was born from necessity; after the America Sings attraction closed in April 1988, the project had significantly exceeded its budget. To recover costs, Imagineers reused the Audio-Animatronics figures from the defunct attraction to populate the new log flume.
While the ride is based on the animated sequences of the 1946 film Song of the South, its development was fraught with tension. Disney executives originally wanted the ride to feature characters from the 1984 film Splash, but Baxter refused, arguing the mermaid did not fit the Br'er Rabbit narrative. The ride's name, Splash Mountain, was a compromise. The attraction's plot also diverged from the film; for example, the character of Uncle Remus was replaced by Br'er Frog as the narrator, and the method of Br'er Rabbit's capture was changed from being stuck in tar to being caught in a beehive.
The ride's technical evolution was equally turbulent. Early test riders were getting soaked rather than lightly sprayed, forcing engineers to redesign the boats to hold seven passengers instead of eight and adding an underwater scoop to prevent leaking. After decades of operation, the U.S. To accommodate Tiana's Bayou Adventure, a retheme inspired by the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, several iterations of the ride shut down in 2023. However, the Tokyo Disneyland version remains unchanged.
