The 2022 film Lightyear is the movie that inspired the Toy Story action figure.
In short: Ever wonder what movie Andy Davis saw in 1995 that made him obsessed with Buzz Lightyear? Pixar finally answered that question with Lightyear, a cinematic sci-fi epic presented as the film-within-a-film. It is a serious, chunky space adventure that reimagines the character as a grounded, ambitious test pilot.
Director Angus MacLane, a lifelong science fiction fan, envisioned Lightyear as a live-action style film that exists within the Toy Story universe. While the toy version voiced by Tim Allen is known for being goofy and comic, MacLane sought a different tone for this project. He cast Chris Evans to provide the gravitas and movie-star quality necessary for a serious action hero, aiming to create fresh character beats while paying homage to the original.
The production process was a massive undertaking that lasted five and a half years. To achieve a specific aesthetic, the team utilized Lego pieces to design ships and drew inspiration from early science fiction models. The film also broke new ground for Pixar, becoming the first of their features to use virtual IMAX cameras. This allowed for 30 minutes of footage to be formatted in a 1.43:1 aspect ratio, a technique previously initiated by the studio during the production of WALL-E in 2008.
The story follows Buzz as he becomes marooned on the planet T'Kani Prime. Due to the physics of time dilation, every test flight he takes to find a way home causes years to pass for his colleagues on the surface. This leads to a complex narrative involving an alternate-timeline version of himself, Zurg, and a robotic feline companion named Sox. The film faced significant international controversy due to a same-sex kiss between characters Alisha Hawthorne and her wife Kiko, leading to theatrical bans in several countries including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Despite positive critical reception, the film struggled financially. With a production budget of approximately $200 million, it grossed $226.4 million worldwide, resulting in an estimated loss of $106 million for the studio. Analysts ultimately classified the project as a box-office bomb, marking a difficult commercial chapter for the studio's return to worldwide theatrical releases following the pandemic-era shift to streaming.
