In short: Turanga Leela, the capable pilot of the Planet Express ship, spends years believing she is the last of a cyclopean alien race. In reality, she is a sewer mutant from 31st-century New York, abandoned by her parents to ensure she could lead a normal life on the surface.

Created by Matt Groening and voiced by Katey Sagal, Leela serves as the primary anchor of competence in the animated series Futurama. While she is a skilled martial artist and a decisive leader, her life is defined by a deep-seated insecurity stemming from her upbringing as an orphan. For the first three seasons, she desperately searches for others like her, even falling for an impostor named Alcazar who claimed they were the last two survivors of an extinct species. The truth is far more grounded: she is the child of Morris and Munda, mutants living in the sewers beneath New New York City, who left her at the Cookieville Minimum Security Orphanarium with a note in mysterious symbols to disguise her origins.

Leela’s character design is a deliberate subversion of science-fiction tropes. While she is intended to be attractive, her single eye and purple hair challenge the standard of the 'glamorously perfect' female lead. Animators initially struggled to convey her expressions through a single eye, and her depth perception is a recurring source of both physical comedy and genuine struggle. Her name is a complex homage, drawing from the Sanskrit term for 'love song' in Olivier Messiaen’s 1948 Turangalîla-Symphonie, the word for lilac in various languages, and a companion from the television show Doctor Who.

Her relationship with Philip J. Fry is the series' central emotional arc. Initially strictly platonic, their dynamic shifts through years of 'on-again, off-again' tension. By the end of the series, the two marry after a time-freezing accident leaves them as the only beings in existence, eventually choosing to 'go around again' through time to continue their lives together. Leela remains a paradox: a tough, weapon-loving survivalist who is deeply vulnerable, constantly navigating the tension between her desire for a normal life and the reality of her mutant heritage.
