A New York mobster finds his new home in the quiet Norwegian town of Lillehammer
In short: When Frank Tagliano enters witness protection, he chooses the isolated town of Lillehammer, Norway, for his fresh start. Starring Steven Van Zandt, the series follows his transformation into Giovanni Henriksen. It made history as the first exclusive content offered by Netflix, blending dark crime drama with an unlikely cultural collision.
Lilyhammer premiered on 25 January 2012 on Norway's NRK1, drawing 998,000 viewers—roughly one-fifth of the country's population. Shortly after, on 6 February 2012, Netflix released all eight episodes of the first season, marking the platform's debut as a provider of original, exclusive content. The series ran for three seasons, concluding its final episode on 17 December 2014.
The story centers on Frank Tagliano, a New York mob underboss who testifies against his own crime family. Seeking refuge, he relocates to Lillehammer, a town he chose specifically because he believed it to be a place where no one would look for him. His adjustment to Norwegian life is facilitated by a local social worker, Jan Johansen, though Frank quickly reverts to his old habits, using intimidation and criminal schemes to build a new empire, including the Flamingo nightclub.
The series is notable for its dry humor and the stark contrast between Frank's American-style organized crime tactics and the social structures of small-town Norway. While Frank attempts to maintain his cover, his past inevitably catches up with him as hitmen from New York arrive to track him down. The show explores themes of identity and reinvention, with Steven Van Zandt's performance drawing frequent comparisons to his role as Silvio Dante in The Sopranos.
Beyond the central narrative, the show features a colorful cast of locals, including the Lien brothers, Torgeir and Roar, and police chief Laila Hovland. The production faced a definitive end when Netflix confirmed its cancellation in July 2015, following a social media announcement by Van Zandt. Despite its conclusion, the series remains a landmark in the history of streaming television.
