The largest television production in Oslo's history is coming to Netflix
In short: A gritty Scandinavian crime drama is set to transform the streets of Oslo. Based on the fifth Harry Hole novel, this ambitious adaptation brings a massive scale of production to the screen, featuring a star-studded cast and a haunting score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.
Announced by Netflix in March 2024 as part of their 'Next on Nordic' presentation, the series 'Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole' is an adaptation of the fifth installment in the Harry Hole series, 'The Devil's Star'. The production is a significant milestone for Working Title, marking their first venture into non-English language television. The series follows the troubled Oslo detective Harry Hole as he navigates a hunt for a serial killer while facing corruption from his colleague, Tom Waaler.
The scale of the production is unprecedented for the region. Between May and December 2024, principal photography spanned 113 shooting days and utilized more than 160 different locations throughout Oslo. This massive undertaking makes it the largest shoot in the history of Oslo's production industry. The creative team includes showrunner Jo Nesbø, with directors Øystein Karlsen and Anna Zackrisson, and a heavy-hitting executive production team featuring Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
The cast brings international and local talent to the screen, led by Tobias Santelmoc as Harry Hole, Joel Kinnaman as the corrupt Tom Waaler, and Pia Tjelta as Harry's partner, Rakel Fauke. The ensemble is supported by actors such as Peter Stormare, Anders Baasmo Christiansen, and Agnes Kittelsen. Following its release on March 26, 2026, the series earned significant critical acclaim, holding a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing the work as stylish and gloriously grim.
