The niche publication that became a target for global intelligence surveillance programs
In short: Launched in 1994, Linux Journal was the premier magazine dedicated to the Linux kernel. It served as a vital hub for open-source enthusiasts for over two decades. Yet, its influence reached beyond technology circles, eventually drawing the unwanted attention of the NSA, which monitored its readership for specific security interests.
Founded by Phil Hughes and Bob Young, the latter a co-founder of Red Hat, the magazine debuted in March 1994 with an exclusive interview featuring Linux creator Linus Torvalds. As the first publication focused entirely on the Linux operating system, it provided specialized knowledge that helped define the early open-source movement. For over 25 years, the magazine evolved alongside the software it covered, transitioning from a traditional print format to a digital-only model starting with its 209th issue in September 2011.
The publication's significance was underscored in 2014 when reports emerged that the NSA’s XKeyscore surveillance system specifically tracked individuals who visited the Linux Journal website. The intelligence agency identified readers as potential targets because of their interest in Tails, a privacy-focused Linux distribution. This revelation highlighted the magazine's role not just as a technical resource, but as a nexus for a community deeply invested in digital privacy and security.
Despite its cultural impact, the magazine faced severe financial instability. It briefly ceased operations in late 2017 due to mounting debts and payroll failures, only to be saved by Private Internet Access in early 2018. Editor-in-chief Doc Searls envisioned the publication becoming a definitive cultural authority, comparing its potential reach to institutions like National Geographic. However, the reprieve was temporary; the magazine shut down in August 2019, laying off its entire staff. It was eventually acquired by Slashdot Media in 2020, which resumed operations in September of that year.
