A $35 million epic that was banned for damaging military honor
In short: In 1981, Moustapha Akkad released a massive historical war epic funded by Libya. Despite its grand scale and positive critical reception, the film was a box office failure and faced a total ban in Italy for offending the national army.
Lion of the Desert is a historical war epic directed by Moustapha Akkad that dramatizes the Second Italo-Senussi War. The film stars Anthony Quinn as the Libyan tribal leader and teacher Omar Mukhtar, who led a resistance against Italian colonization. Facing the ambitions of Benito Mussolini to establish a "Fourth Shore" in Africa, Mukhtar utilized guerrilla warfare to stall the Italian military for 20 years, despite his relatively primitive weaponry being no match for the mechanized tanks and aircraft used by the Regio Esercito.
The production was a massive undertaking, filmed in Libya between March 4 and October 2, 1979. The Libyan government, under Muammar Gaddafi, provided $35 million in financing. While the film received positive reviews—with critic Vincent Canby calling it "spectacular"—it struggled commercially, earning only about $1.5 million worldwide. In the United States, its original release brought in roughly $1 million.
The film's depiction of Italian colonial atrocities, including concentration camps and the killing of prisoners, led to significant political tension. In 1982, Italian authorities banned the film, with Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti stating it was "damaging to the honor of the army." It remained largely absent from Italian screens until it was shown on pay TV in 2009, coinciding with a visit by Muammar Gaddafi to Italy.
Historians and critics offer nuanced views on its accuracy. While some, like Alex von Tunzelmann, suggest the depiction of Libyan resistance is broadly accurate, others, such as C.W. Smith, criticized the film for its obvious bias and character portrayals.
