How a 2025 live-action remake became the highest-grossing hybrid film in history
In short: The 2025 Lilo & Stitch remake shattered records, becoming the first live-action and animation hybrid to surpass $1 billion at the global box office. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the film reimagines the 2002 classic while introducing significant narrative shifts, including the removal of the original antagonist, Captain Gantu.
Development for the live-action project began in October 2018, eventually landing under the direction of Dean Fleischer Camp. The production faced significant hurdles, including the 2023 Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which forced a temporary suspension of principal photography. Despite these delays, the film premiered on May 17, 2025, at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, followed by a wide release on May 23. It ultimately grossed $1.038 billion worldwide, securing its place as the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2025.
A central creative choice in this iteration was the removal of Gantu, the original animated film's primary antagonist. Fleischer Camp argued that Gantu’s presence made the story feel like a conventional action movie. By shifting the antagonist role to Dr. Jumba Jookiba, the filmmakers aimed to emphasize a personal connection between the creator and his creation. Fleischer Camp framed Jumba as a 'terrible delinquent father figure' for Stitch, allowing the conflict to better reflect the film's core themes rather than relying on a generic villain.
The film features a mix of new and returning talent. Chris Sanders, who co-wrote and directed the 2002 original, reprised his iconic voice role as Stitch, completing his recording sessions in late 2023. Other notable casting included Maia Kealoha in her film debut as Lilo, and Zach Galifianakis, who portrayed both the voice of Jumba and the physical character of 'Marcus'. The production also navigated public scrutiny regarding casting choices, eventually replacing Kahiau Machado with Kaipo Dudoit for the role of David Kawena following controversy over Machado's past social media activity.
The story remains grounded in the bond between the Pelekai sisters and their alien companion. While the film follows the familiar beats of Lilo adopting Stitch as a 'dog' to avoid capture by the United Galactic Federation, it introduces new elements, such as Tūtū, a neighbor character played by Amy Hill. The success of the film has already spurred development on a sequel, with Sanders attached to write and direct for a planned 2028 release.
