How a seven-year passion project became a modern political romantic comedy
In short: Long Shot, the 2019 romantic comedy starring Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron, took years to reach the screen. Originally titled Flarsky, the script evolved from a simple concept into a sharp, layered film that blends political satire with the nostalgic charm of 1980s-era rom-coms like Tootsie and When Harry Met Sally.
The journey of Long Shot began in the early 2010s when screenwriter Dan Sterling sought to transition from television to film. The script, which producer Evan Goldberg compared to Pretty Woman, languished at Point Grey Pictures for years. Seth Rogen, who was attached to the project, noted that it took him approximately seven years to reach a level of professional popularity that would allow him to work alongside Charlize Theron. Theron eventually signed on to star and produce, even contributing to the development of her character, Charlotte Field, the United States Secretary of State.
To ensure the film felt relevant, the production team brought in Liz Hannah, known for her work on The Post, to update the script with contemporary political issues. Director Jonathan Levine, who joined the project in 2017, aimed to evoke the spirit of classic 1980s romantic comedies. The film was shot in Montreal and Cartagena, Colombia, and underwent several scheduling shifts before its eventual release on May 3, 2019. Despite the high-stakes political premise, the core of the film remains the chemistry between its leads, which critics praised as the driving force behind its success.
The film's reception was generally positive, holding an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While some critics, such as Peter Debruge of Variety, found the premise to be a far-fetched wish-fulfillment fantasy, others appreciated its humor and charm. Ultimately, the film grossed $53.9 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. By the end of the story, the characters find a path forward, with Charlotte becoming the first female president in 2021 and her partner, Fred, assuming the role of the country's first male spouse.
