A Texas housewife's quiet life unravels into a notorious 1980s murder case
In short: In the late 1970s, Candy Montgomery appeared to be the quintessential suburban housewife in Wylie, Texas. Yet, an extramarital affair with a fellow churchgoer spiraled into a lethal confrontation. This biographical drama explores the humanity behind a headline-grabbing crime that continues to fascinate audiences more than four decades later.
The miniseries Love & Death, which premiered on HBO Max in April 2023, dramatizes the true story of Candy Montgomery. Set against the backdrop of suburban Texas, the narrative follows Montgomery as she navigates a conventional lifestyle that eventually leads to her standing trial for the murder of her neighbor, Betty Gore. The conflict stems from Montgomery’s affair with Allan Gore, Betty’s husband, a sequence of events that ultimately resulted in a violent death.
Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter and Clark Johnson and written by David E. Kelley, the production features Elizabeth Olsen in the lead role, supported by a cast including Jesse Plemons and Lily Rabe. Filmed across various Texas locations such as Austin, La Grange, and Lockhart, the series attempts to provide a nuanced perspective on the individuals involved. Critics have noted that while the show is well-crafted and features a standout performance by Olsen, it faces comparisons to other adaptations of the same case, such as the 2022 series Candy.
Despite mixed critical reception—holding a 62% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a similar score on Metacritic—the show achieved significant commercial success. By June 2023, Max reported that it had become their most-watched original limited series globally. The project’s impact was further recognized during the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, where Plemons earned a nomination for his portrayal of a supporting character within a limited series format. The show’s ability to humanize its subjects remains a central point of discussion among reviewers.
