The true crime drama that turned a victim's life into television
In short: How does a family navigate the shadow of a notorious killer? The series Happy Face explores the real-life trauma of Melissa Moore, whose father became a serial murderer. It transforms a chilling autobiography and podcast into a high-stakes drama about survival, memory, and the weight of public scrutiny.
The television series Happy Face is an American crime drama adapted from two primary sources: Melissa Moore’s 2018 true-crime podcast and her 2009 autobiography, Shattered Silence. The narrative centers on the real-life experiences of Moore, who is the daughter of Keith Hunter Jesperson—a man known as the "Happy Face killer." The show depicts Moore's life as a makeup artist for the fictional daytime health talk show, The Dr. Greg Show, while she grapples with her family's connection to a serial murderer.
The production journey began in September 2020 when it was reported that Jennifer Cacicio, Robert King, and Michelle King were developing the series for CBS All Access. The project received a green light from Paramount+ during October 2021, involving CBS Studios alongside King Size Productions, iHeartPodcasts, and Semi-Formal Productions as producers. Principal photography occurred in Vancouver between March 19 and June 19, 2024, with specific scenes filmed at New Westminster City Hall to stand in for Texas.
The series premiered on Paramount+ on March 20, 2025, featuring an eight-episode season. While the first two episodes debuted simultaneously, the remaining six were released weekly. Despite a notable cast including Dennis Quaid as Jesperson and Annaleigh Ashford as Moore, the show faced critical mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it held a 57% positive rating from 23 critics, with Metacritic assigning it a score of 55 out of 100, citing "tonal uncertainty" in its execution.
