How a Civil War tabloid became the undisputed titan of Spanish sports journalism
In short: Founded in the heat of the Spanish Civil War, Marca evolved from a weekly publication into a national powerhouse. Today, it dominates Spain's sports media landscape, commanding over half of the country's total sports readership and shaping the narrative around football giants like Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Marca was established on 21 December 1938 in San Sebastián under the guidance of its founding editor, Manuel Fernández Cuesta. Initially a weekly, the paper transitioned to a daily format on 25 November 1942. Over the decades, it has navigated complex corporate shifts, moving from Punto Editorial to Espacio Editorial—later known as Recoletos—before finally becoming part of the Unidad Editorial group in 2007. This evolution solidified its status as a cultural institution, even earning the title of World's Best Designed Newspaper from the Society for News Design in 2004.
The newspaper’s influence extends far beyond the printed page. It has diversified into radio with Radio Marca and briefly operated a television channel. Its reach is immense, with a readership exceeding 2.5 million as of 2007. This dominance has occasionally sparked controversy; in 2008, Sir Alex Ferguson famously accused the paper of acting as a vehicle for Real Madrid to unsettle players. Despite such friction, Marca remains a central arbiter of Spanish football, bestowing prestigious annual honors like the Pichichi for top goalscorers, the Zamora for goalkeepers, and the Miguel Muñoz for head coaches.
Beyond traditional journalism, Marca has aggressively expanded into digital and niche media. It launched the gaming magazine Marca Player in 2008, which ran for 46 issues before the staff pivoted to launch the Spanish edition of IGN in 2012. The brand also maintains deep connections with its audience through interactive initiatives, such as the online poll that crowned Lionel Messi as the best football player of all time. From its wartime origins to its current status as a multimedia conglomerate, Marca continues to define the rhythm of Spanish sports, serving as both a chronicler and a participant in the history of the game.
